Walfred Huber, Austrian blacksmith and artist is an avid researcher of the style and technical history of the blacksmith tradition. As many other blacksmiths, he also faced the same agonizing question: how were the hinges of the Notre Dame made? However, after lots of brainstorming, countless hours of trial and error and a lucky visit to a museum it all paid off: he was able to solve the riddle!
At the Musee Cluny he found a piece which was very similar in structure and construction to the hinges of the Notre Dame. When he held it in his hands and examined it from all sides he was finally able to see all the layers. With this knowledge he has been able to devise the sequence of steps that are necesssary to create this masterpiece.
This is what we will be presenting to you.

With ‘The Devil’s Blacksmith’ our main purpose was to document the working process of Master Huber. We know him for more than 15 years now and always wanted to make a film about his traditional technique. This topic was far the best choice to show the world what Master Huber is capable of. So the first part of the project is partly done, we have all the rushes to finish the ‘workshop part’ of the project.

Unfortunately we need more time for finishing the film. The second part is to get to French locations and shoot at the Musee de Cluny and at the Notre Dame de Paris. Master Huber would tell us the whole story how he was able to reconstruct these hinges and would also speak about his special technique of forge welding.

So at the moment we have a 35 minutes long, English narrated version of the documentary of the workshop part. This is the same version that you can watch short excerpts from at our Facebook page or at our Instagram profile.

Thank you for your contribution!
